Space–time light modulator for laser radiation control

Abstract: The principle of formation of inhomogeneous electric fields is applied to an electrooptic KDP-type crystal. This makes it possible to use this crystal, together with polarizers, in a space-time light modulator which can perform functions of a high-speed switch and a soft-edge stop. A method used to calculate electric fields in such modulators establishes the relationship between the design parameters and the transverse distribution of light transmission. Comparison with experimental results shows that this method is in error by not more than 10%.
