Investigation of damage threshold variations in NaCl

Abstract: The character of the laser-induced damage threshold distribution of NaCl specimens was investigated and certain special features were discovered. The morphology of the residual damage was compared with the optical strength of the specimens. It was shown that a study of the morphology of the damage does not provide an adequate criterion for identifying the intrinsic breakdown mechanism.
