Abstract: The geometric-optics approximation is used to derive an equation describing evolution of ultrashort solitons taking account of the temporal dispersion and of the Kerr nonlinearity. This evolution equation is of the Korteweg — de Vries type in which the role of the unknown function is played by the Poynting vector amplitude.
