Abstract: A theoretical analysis is made of the mechanism of formation of nonlinear optical inhomogeneities in active media of gas lasers due to the influence of the radiation intensity on the rate of relaxation of the excited molecules. Perturbations of the density of the amplifying medium of a CO2 laser are calculated and the change in the phase characteristics of its radiation is estimated.
