Calculations of the diffraction efficiency of plane holograms for a speckle-inhomogeneous object field

Abstract: Calculations are made of the diffraction efficiency of plane transmission (both phase and amplitude) holograms for the case when the object field in the hologram plane is a speckle-inhomogeneous wave and the reference wave is plane or spherical. The intensity of distortions which, during reconstruction, diffract in the same order as the fundamental image is determined. The maximum diffraction efficiency of a phase hologram for reconstruction of a reference wave is 18.5%, as compared with 33.9% for a plane object wave, and the distortions produced in this case have an energy 2.3% of the incident energy, giving a signal-to-noise ratio of the order of 8.
