Abstract:
An investigation was made of a 750-m optical fiber line for connecting computer units. The spectral characteristics of the optical elements of the line (light source, fiber waveguides, and photodetector) were determined and a study was made of the influence of the noise properties of the signal conversion and amplification elements on the reliability and stability of information transfer. It was found that the use of mass-produced light-emitting diodes (of the AL107B type) and photodetectors (of the FD-10K type) in conjunction with low-loss fibers (numerical aperture 0.16 and core diameter 40 μ) ensured a ~20 dB dynamic range of permissible attenuation of an optical signal in the fiber channel (this value was obtained without allowance for the coupling losses at the input to the fiber channel).
