Explosive absorption of radiation

A. N. Oraevsky, I. E. Protsenko
Abstract: An analysis is made of the mechanism of absorption of electromagnetic radiation when the initial energy level of the absorbing transition is not the ground state. It is found that energy exchange in a system of absorbing levels results in complex absorption dynamics: the existence of a radiation intensity threshold, hysteresis effects, and pulsating conditions.
