Abstract: An analysis is made of the physicochemical processes in the active medium and the role of xenon in the mechanism of population inversion in carbon monoxide lasers is discussed. It is concluded that the positive effect of the addition of xenon to the working mixture of a sealed CO laser is due to a reduction in the rate of plasma-chemical reactions, which produce the carbon dioxide gas and when the concentration of this gas reaches a certain value, the population inversion is destroyed.
