Characteristics of laser ignition of titanium by obliquely incident radiation

Abstract:
A theoretical model is put forward to account for the size effect observed on ignition by laser radiation incident obliquely on the surface of a thin metal plate. The results of direct experiments involving determination of the ignition thresholds of titanium are reported for different conditions of focusing of unpolarized YAG laser radiation and different angles of incidence on the surface of titanium.
