Stability of solitons in a two-mode fiber waveguide with a group velocity mismatch

Yu. S. Kivshar
Abstract: A study is reported of the stability of soliton pulses propagating in a two-mode fiber waveguide under conditions of a mismatch between the group velocities of the optical modes. An analytic explanation is proposed of the dependence of the threshold amplitude of an initial pulse, responsible for intermode locking of the pulses, on the mismatch between the group velocities. An analytically derived dependence is shown to be in good agreement with earlier numerical experiments. Decay of coupled intermode states of solitons due to dissipative losses is predicted.
