Abstract: The dynamics of an optical discharge in argon maintained by CO2 laser radiation was studied as a function of the focusing angle. The characteristics of the growth of stable and unstable discharges were determined. The positions of the optical discharge boundaries were compared with calculations based on published theoretical models.
