Purely optical discrete logic elements based on bistable thin-film interferometers

Abstract:
A range of discrete logic elements for purely optical data processing systems (optical computers) was constructed utilizing optical bistability in vacuum-evaporated thin-film interferometers with an intermediate ZnS or ZnSe layer. Operation of optically programmed components of a processor, of triggers of various types, and of relaxation oscillators (timers) was demonstrated.
