Abstract: An analysis is made of the photoemission of electrons in gases when the surface of a solid is subjected to high-intensity ultraviolet laser radiation which does not cause surface heating. Various situations are considered in which generation of high local electric fields and of a dense cloud of charged particles near the surface may alter and even determine the mechanism of laser-stimulated processes on surfaces of solids.
