Abstract:
An experimental investigation was made of the shift of the λ = 0.63 μ neon line due to the Ne–Ne and Ne–electron collisions. The collisions with electrons gave rise to a red shift (<veδe''> = 4.3·10–5 cm3/sec) whereas the Ne–Ne collisions produced a blue shift [<vδ''> = (1.3 ± 0.3)·10–9 cm3/sec], which was easily explained by the presence of a repulsive potential resulting from the overlap of atomic shells. The red shift due to the Ne–Ne collisions observed by other authors was probably due to the masking influence of the discharge current, i.e., it was due to the collisions with electrons.
