Abstract: A theoretical investigation is reported of the deformation of the density profile of a plasma by a ponderomotive force under transient conditions. Initially, the structure of the density profile near the critical point coincides exactly with the solution of the steady-state problem. Plasma expansion is accompanied by growth of a spiky instability in the form of stimulated Brillouin scattering.
