Abstract:
A theoretical investigation is made of the properties of the fundamental mode in a crossed optical cavity. It is shown that the caustic of the fundamental mode, which has small transverse dimensions at the cavity centre, expands strongly and assumes an annular shape on the mirrors. The cavity is relatively short and can have a central hole, so that it can be used in high-power free-electron lasers.
