New principle of formation of ultrashort pulses in solid-state lasers with self-phase-modulation and gain saturation

Abstract:
It is shown for the first time that the balance between self-phase-modulation (SPM) and gain saturation in an active medium of a solid-state laser with a limited gain bandwidth can generate a chirped frequency-shifted quasisoliton. Introduction of additional amplitude or phase modulation stabilises this quasisoliton.
