Abstract: A theoretical investigation is made of the interaction between an electron and a barrier in metal–barrier–metal junctions in a high-frequency electromagnetic field. Using the second harmonic as an example, it is shown that harmonic generation does not take place over the whole length of the metal wire but in a region near the barrier.
