Theoretical derivation of Smith's empirical formula

Abstract: The rate equation for a four-level system and the principal relationships governing discharges in atomic gases are used in an analytic derivation of the well-known empirical formula of Smith for the small-signal (unsaturated) gain in the specific case of a mixture of atomic He and Ne gases.
