Pumping of nuclear levels by x-ray radiation of a laser plasma

Abstract: Theoretical analysis is made of the possibility of the excitation of low-lying nuclear levels by x-ray radiation pulses emitted by a high-temperature laser plasma. Two- and three-level pumping schemes are considered. It is shown that, in principle, it should be possible to obtain strong narrow γ-ray lines from recoilless nuclei and to invert the population of excited nuclear levels.
