Abstract: An analysis is made of the propagation of TM waves in strip waveguides with a thin surface layer of a nonlinear substance. The solutions for two types of nonlinearity are found in the form of soliton waves propagating along a waveguide and characterized by a transverse structure of linear modes. It is shown also that the wavefront may be reversed in such multimode waveguides in the case of stimulated scattering of light in the nonlinear layer.
