Self-channeling of a laser beam in opaque solids

Abstract: Self-channeling of a λ = 10.6 μ laser beam was observed during the cutting of quartz glass. The effect made it possible to drill deep holes and cut relatively thick sheets. A physical analysis of the effect yielded the principal relationships describing this type of self-channeling.
