Calculation of the efficiency of optical pumping of 133Cs by monochromatic radiation

V. K. Egorov, V. A. Maslov
Abstract: Machine calculations are reported of the populations of the Zeeman sublevels of 133Cs atoms when single-frequency laser radiation is used to excite transitions in the hyperfine structure of the D1 and D2 lines in two limiting cases: without mixing of the P states and with complete P mixing. The optimal pumping schemes for quantum frequency standards and magnetometers are considered and these involve selective excitation of the individual components of the D1 line by linearly polarized laser radiation.
