Coupling of optical radiation into fiber waveguides of elliptic cross section

Yu. Kh. Ayunts, M. I. Belovolov, E. M. Dianov, A. B. Tsibulya
Abstract: Calculation formulas are derived for estimating the optimal parameters of optical components needed to match Gaussian radiation beams to fiber waveguides of elliptic (and more specifically, circular) cross section. Relationships are obtained for estimating the efficiency of coupling of optical energy into such waveguides by matching devices. A unified method is proposed for the design of focons (tapering fibers), objectives, and microlenses (anamorphic, spherical, and cylindrical) used in matching of lasers to fiber waveguides.
