Self-termination of free oscillations in ruby at low temperatures

Abstract: An investigation was made of the duration and output energy of ruby laser pulses emitted at low temperatures. The duration of emission from a low-Q resonator was governed by the time needed to equalize the transverse distribution of the population inversion in the course of laser action. Equations were obtained for the duration and output energy of the laser pulses.
