Abstract: The known constants of crystals transparent in the 10.6 μ wavelength range are used to calculate the stimulated Brillouin scattering gains and decay times of hypersonic waves. The most promising materials for stimulated Brillouin scattering at 10.6 μ are identified and the requirements in respect of CO2 lasers needed to ensure efficient excitation of such scattering are formulated.
