Abstract:
The first fibre-optic Raman amplifier of signals for wavelengths in the range 1.3 μm was developed. The gain was 30 dB when the amplifier was pumped with 350 mW of 1.24 μm radiation. A high amplification efficiency was achieved when the active medium was a large-aperture low-loss single-mode optical fibre made of quartz glass with an enhanced germanium content in the core.
