Influence of the phase front parameters on the path of a beam of rays

Abstract: The geometric optics approximation is used to derive an equation describing the path of a beam of rays in an inhomogeneous but locally isotropic medium. The predicted additional twisting, proportional to the average phase front curvature, is confirmed. The effect disappears in the case of a rectilinear path.
