Investigation of laser plasma expansion in an ambient gas by high-speed photography

Abstract: A method was developed for investigating the behavior of a laser plasma in vacuum and in an ambient gas by high-speed photography. Photographs were obtained of laser plasma expansion in an ambient gas at various pressures. A hydrodynamic instability of the laser plasma front was observed during expansion in an ambient gas. The experimental results were analyzed theoretically.
