Abstract:
An investigation was made of the kinetics of a jet singlet oxygen generator (SOG). It was found that the rate of Cl2 absorption by the surface of the solution was β = β0 [KOH]01/2, where β0 ~ 148 liter0.5·cm·s–1·mol–0.5. The rate constant of the O2 (1Δ) formation reaction was estimated to be К ≈ 4 X 108 liter·mol–1·s–1. When the Cl2 pressure in the jet SOG was high, the production of HO2– was compensated mainly by its molecular diffusion from the depth of the solution. Quenching of O2 (1Δ) in the interior of the SOG was approximately five times stronger than that deduced from an analysis of known reactions. An investigation was made of the dependences of the output characteristics of the jet SOG on its initial parameters and relationships were derived for achieving a high O2 (1Δ) yield and a low Cl2 concentration. It was demonstrated that a jet SOG could operate at a pressure of 30 Torr with an O2 (1Δ) yield of 60%, a Cl2 concentration of less than 10%, and a water vapor content of ~ 5%.
