Abstract: Optimisation of the energy characteristics of a chemical CO laser revealed damage to the optical resonator mirrors. Estimates indicated that when the power density of the incident cw laser radiation was 2–2.5 kW cm–2 the induced thermoelastic stresses could reach the damage threshold of mirrors on fluorite substrates.
