Adaptive control based on the discrimination of the sharpness-function gradient in an optical process

Abstract: Signals proportional to components of the gradient of the sharpness function can be generated by optical methods. A numerical simulation indicates that this approach would be effective in work with low light fluxes, for which quantum detection effects are important.
