Highly efficient erbium glass lasers with Q switching based on frustrated total internal reflection

Abstract: An investigation was made of various erbium glass systems with Q switching based on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR). The absolute efficiency in the generation of giant pulses by flashlamp pumping was 0.38%. It was concluded that FTIR switches would be most suitable for low-gain lasers.
