Semiconductor laser pumped by solar radiation

Abstract:
An analysis of the progress made in the development of semiconductor lasers and solar cells is used in considering the feasibility of constructing a semiconductor laser pumped by solar radiation. The design of such a laser is proposed and a technological method for fabricating it is suggested. Calculations indicate that the lasing threshold should be reached at several radiation power densities ~ 4 W/cm2 and the efficiency of such a laser could be as high as 40%.
