Abstract:
A study was made of the competition between backward stimulated Raman scattering and optical breakdown in compressed methane. The conditions under which the backscattered Stokes radiation was formed from only one pulse in a pump train were found. This was the first demonstration of the feasibility of using backward stimulated Raman scattering in selection of single pulses.
