"Atomic-field" bremsstrahlung of multiply charged ions as a pump source for a short-wavelength Auger laser

A. D. Andreev, V. V. Ryzhov
Abstract: A new pump source is proposed for a short-wavelength laser utilizing Xe II Auger transitions. This is based on the mechanism of "atomic-field" bremsstrahlung of multiply charged ions in Xe I. Preliminary calculations indicate that a population inversion of Xe III levels may be achieved and λ = 108.9 nm amplified spontaneous radiation may be obtained because the pumping zone is long (up to 1 m). The ion beam parameters required to implement experimentally the proposed system can now be achieved using various facilities.
