Abstract: A fundamentally new mechanism of generation of higher harmonics in a strong laser field is proposed. It is based on stimulated self-scattering of a femtosecond pulse during its propagation in a Raman-active medium. As in the case of rare gases, the output radiation spectrum has a wide plateau and a steep short-wavelength edge.
