Abstract: A mechanism based on the concept of an explosive breeding of point defects is outlined for the multipulse damage to semiconductors by short laser pulses. Analytic expressions are derived for the critical temperature, the critical intensity, and the intensity dependence of the critical number of pulses. The theoretical results agree well with experimental data.
