Abstract: A theory of cascade generation of the third harmonic in a laser cavity is developed in the constant intensity approximation. Changes in the phases of the interacting waves are taken into account. The efficiency of third-harmonic generation has a maximum in its dependences on the intensities of the pump and second harmonic. Optimal phase matching can considerably increase this efficiency.
