Energies of X-ray laser pulses and stimulated emission wavelengths achievable by pumping X-ray lasers using the National Ignition Facility

Abstract:
We present estimates according to which the energies of X-ray laser pulses with wavelengths of 35.6 and 30.56 Å, obtained by pumping single-pass lasers on 4d–4p transitions of nickel-like Au and Bi ions by sixteen beams of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) with a doubled radiation frequency, are ∼75 mJ and of the order of 0.01 –1 mJ, respectively. It is assumed that the contribution of one NIF beam to the pump energy of the X-ray laser is 2.36 kJ, and the duration of irradiation of each target area used to form its active medium is 500 ps. A possibility of obtaining information useful for optimising the design and/or irradiation regime of thermonuclear targets with X-ray lasers is considered.
