We discuss the design issues and characteristics of coherent fibre-optic communication networks taking into account the many physical effects that simultaneously influence signal propagation. Algorithms and easy-to-use 'engineering' techniques are proposed that allow network performance to be predicted and the design to be significantly simplified.
