Excimer-laser-based lidar system for stratospheric and tropospheric ozone measurements

Abstract:
A differential-absorption lidar system was developed on the basis of electric-discharge excimer lasers. It was designed to measure the ozone concentrations in the atmosphere at altitudes of 3–32 km. The radiation from an Xe–CI laser and the first Stokes component, resulting form the scattering of this radiation in hydrogen (308 and 353 nm), were used in the stratospheric measurements. The second and third components of the radiation from a Kr–F laser scattered in deuterium (292 and 319 nm) were used in the troposphere. The system was tested in the city of Suwon in South Korea. The results of the stratospheric ozone measurements, carried out there in April and May of 1993, were in good agreement with the average data obtained by satellite (Nimbus-7) monitoring of the subtropical region.
