Abstract: A mathematical model and a numerical calculation scheme are proposed for diffusive redistribution of carbon, in the thermal influence zone of carbon steels and alloys, as a result of surface treatments with high-energy sources. Experimental and numerical investigations are reported of the influence of the interlamellar spacing and of the treatment rate on the depth of the hardened layer.
