Stability of the eigenvalue solutions in a nonlinear directional coupler

Abstract:
It is shown that a symmetric eigenvalue solution is unstable for a system of two identical nonlinear waveguides with a distributed coupling if the waves propagating along these waveguides are sufficiently strong. The instability conditions are determined. This effect can be used to construct completely optical logic elements for computers.
