Enhancement of the resolving power of coherent optical systems by aperture synthesis method

Abstract: Aperture synthesis was performed by phase diffraction gratings in a coherent optical system. A proportional reduction in the useful object field enhanced the spatial resolution by two orders of magnitude compared with the classical diffraction limit. The required precision of alignment of the whole system, including diffraction gratings, was not greater than that needed for conventional optical systems and was governed by the object lenses employed.
