Abstract:
An analysis was made of the fine structure of the Rayleigh scattering spectra and of the efficiency of conversion of neodymium laser radiation into visible light in activated potassium germanate glasses of various compositions. A correlation was found between the intensity of the central component in the Rayleigh scattering spectrum and the intensity of the Tb3+ ion luminescence due to the cooperative sensitization of Tb3+ by Yb3+. This effect is interpreted by assuming activator segregation. It is concluded that the effect is fairly common and it may be used in the search for, and investigations of, quantumelectronic materials.
