Abstract:
An investigation was made of the distribution of color centers along a glass optical fiber and a single-fiber optical cable with the fiber lying freely in a tube. The induced optical attenuation of the investigated fibers and cables was used as a measure of the number of color centers. The fibers and cables were irradiated with γ rays from a 60Co source and the dose was up to 107 rad. The dependence of the induced attenuation on the dose was determined for each investigated segment. The attenuation was measured at the wavelength of 0.82 μ.
