Breakdown of the active medium in a CO2 laser caused by its own radiation

Abstract: Pressure dependences of the breakdown energy density are calculated numerically for N2 and CO2, and for N2+CO2+He mixtures subjected to pulses of different duration. The influence of a static field on the breakdown threshold is investigated. It is shown that the output energy approaches saturation below the breakdown value.
