Abstract: An investigation was made of the feasibility of laser – ultrasonic hardening of the surface of steel with a controlled change in the structurally stressed state of the surface layer. The advantages of the laser – ultrasonic treatment were demonstrated by the formation of harder and deeper surface hardening zones with simultaneous control of their structure and phase composition and of the formation of residual stresses.
