Self-maintenance of a continuous optical discharge in gases near solid targets

Abstract: A stable optical discharge in xenon was initiated by a cw CO2 laser beam which evaporated a surface impurity film from a solid target. Some characteristics of this discharge were investigated and it was found that its maintenance resulted in screening of the target from the incident radiation.
